The mechanics of the incubator can be observed through the clear plastic dome as well as the individual chicks hatching. Great excitement is always evident as the students observe the eggs rocking, gradually piping then cracking and finally watching the wet, sticky chick kick free from the shell! Once dry the chick is then placed with others in the brooding area where it will move around freely, feeding , drinking, interacting and developing. Observation and studies can be conducted within the brooding area, which can include:-
More advanced studies may be undertaken by working out at any given time total feed consumed - total weight of chicks and thereby working out feed conversion ratio ie kg of feed consumed to gross weigh achievedumed to gross weigh achieved Temperature readings can be recorded each day both in the incubator and brooding area and appropriate graphs kept.
The programme provides endless study and observation options for all age groups
and has been used successfully by innovated teaching staff for 4 years. Reminder to Queensland Teachers
We have been asked to remind Teachers
that under The Queensland Animal Care &
Protection Act 2001 they are obliged to notify the
Animal Ethics Officer at Education Queensland that they
are using a Chicken Hatching Programme, when the chicks
produced are being used for any scientific experiment ie
weighing of chicks etc. Should the program be solely for observation then the above will not apply. Should
you require further information regarding this policy
